Magnolia’s offers a highly organic menu while supporting local farms & businesses. They carry a delicious selection of Biodynamic wines, organic beers, ales and ciders. Cindy Gingrey and her father-in-law Bill Gingrey bought Magnolia Natural Market & Café
on York Street in January of 2009 and sold it to Tommy Detwiler and his Father James Detwiler in October 1, 2014 to continue the Organic food and beverage ethical food preparation.
If your family balks at any dinner that doesn’t involve hamburgers and French fries, the flavors and colors may just win them over. Also, it can just be our little secret!
If you are serious about changing your eating habits and your health, not a bad plan considering the health care issues today in our country, consider adding more raw foods to your diet. A favorite of ours here at Magnolia’s, specially in this awful steam-room-like weather, is adapted form The Complete Book of Raw Food.
It goes something like this:
2 large organic tomatoes, seeded & diced 2 organic avocados 2 organic mangoes Grated fresh ginger, to taste (we use aprox. 1 tablespoon) ½ tablespoon cinnamon Dash freshly grated nutmeg 20 organic carrots, juiced
Add the first 6 ingredients to your food processor (or blender) and add enough carrot juice to cover. Slowly add the rest of the carrot juice while processing. Garnish with fresh mint leaves if desired…Serious inner happiness!
Think of biodynamic farming as super-charged organic farming. Biodynamics is a concept first conceived in 1924 by Rudolph Steiner, an Austrian scholar, architect, playwright, educator, and philosopher. His lectures on agriculture remain the foundation of biodynamic farming. To simplify, biodynamics considers the entire farm as a living system: the soil, the plants, the animals, sustainable and self-sufficient. Biodynamics also sees the farm as it relates to the pattern of celestial rhythms. Plants are planted, harvested and fed according to a complicated relationship with the cosmos. The soil and plants are nourished with a seemingly random list of material added to compost.
The produce grown under biodynamic conditions have consistently more measurable amounts of nutrients, anti-oxidants, higher brix (sugar) levels. The soils are healthier and produce healthier harvest.
