Lots of people talk about the importance of farm-to-table, including me. However, I really don’t mean just any farm when I say this. Factory farms are very different from healthy and natural organic farms or local farms. If you’re buying food from factory farms, you honestly might as well be eating the worst processed food on the market. It’s about the same.
Factory farmed animals are raised in terrible and toxic conditions, and we pay for it in many ways whenever there is any kind of outbreak. Vegetables raised with agro-chemicals are more or less going to be giving people a dose of poison every single time that people eat anything. Buying organic produce is like buying a completely different product. With produce that you eat without peeling, such as apples, you’re practically eating a lot of the toxins directly.
People still talk about the ideal type of farming. At this point, it is much easier for people to acknowledge the type of farming that does not represent an ideal. Everyone can agree that factory farming is bad, although people are going to have different reasons for saying that. Everyone can agree that organic and local farms are better than factory farms. When people talk about the future of farming, they are still somewhat uncertain by this point in time.
I think that the ideal situation is going to involve aeroponics farms that are grown indoors. We won’t need to use any agro-chemicals for farms like this at all. We’ll actually be able to just harvest our fresh produce exactly from where everything is grown. People can set up farms like this in the city, so the cities will finally be independent in a way that just won’t work today. People won’t have to use chemicals to protect the farms from bugs or other parasites. Everyone can have all of the fresh produce that they want out-of-season, since everything can be in season indoors.
Even organic and natural farming is going to wear out the soil eventually. There is no way to prevent that except for finding a way to grow things without soil. We’ve already done that with aeroponics farming. All we have to do now is to make sure that people can start practicing it at a broader level.
However, a world of aeroponics farming is still pretty far away. For now, we need to be able to just make do with the organic produce that we have, which is still much better for the environment and for people in the environment than the commercially produced meat, vegetables, and grains that people would eat otherwise. Environmentalists do have to look to the future, but we also need to work on what we can do today. Moving away from factory farming altogether is the first step for a lot of people. Hopefully, it will not be the last step for everyone, if people want to find a way to make everything truly sustainable.
